Bill Gates says six Covid vaccines could be available by spring 2021

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/08/bill-gates-says-six-covid-vaccines-could-be-available-by-spring-2021.html

Perhaps the biggest news of the last week is that COVID vaccines are becoming available and the first person to receive one had her shot today in the UK. She is 90. There will be (and is) a lot of misinformation around vaccines. Make sure you get your information from a trusted, well-researched report. One of the early funders of a vaccine was Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation. He says more vaccines are in the pipeline.

How to Teach Your Kids Valuable Financial Lessons at Every Age

https://redtri.com/how-to-teach-your-kids-valuable-financial-lessons-at-every-age/

Children at every age can learn about finances. This article does a good job explaining age-appropriate lessons for your toddler, child, tweener and teen.

Schools confront 'off the rails' numbers of failing grades

https://apnews.com/7fde612c3dbfd2e21fab9673ca49ad89

This article is pretty focused on research in Oregon, but it affects our children and families across the board. The researchers found the increase in the number of children receiving “F’s” jumped from 8% to 38% during the pandemic. I’ve always believed that children don’t fail education, we fail children. It’s also important to remember that the education “system” also includes parents and communities, not just teachers and administrators.

NPR always does a great job of turning life lessons for children into comic-book form so that children and parents can consume information easier. This playground and masking protocol article is no exception. Thanks again NPR.

Building Regina, block by block: Teen joins worldwide Minecraft project to create digital version of planet

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatchewan/regina-minecraft-build-the-world-project-1.5827714

This is an inspiring article about a teen in Halifax, Canada who started a challenge to map the world’s cities on Minecraft. Great use of technology to increase social bonds and employ critical thinking in the areas of math and science.

Metro Detroit teacher dresses up as a character for virtual class every day

https://www.fox17online.com/news/metro-detroit-teacher-dresses-up-as-a-character-for-virtual-class-every-day

Keeping with the vein of inspirational articles, look at the effort this teacher puts into reaching her kids. I love when I see people realizing that curriculum can only be taught if there is a strong bond of trust built between teacher and student.
