Positive Links for Children, Teens and Families during the Coronavirus (#39)

COVID-19 Links 29.12.2020–05.01.2021

Top Links This Week

There was a lot in this week’s news about depression, perhaps it is because a new year has started and the pandemic is still with us. I want this newsletter to be realistic, but also to be positive. We will be overcome if we focus on what we canNOT do. I will post links that focus on what we CAN do, even if it is seemingly small. If your life feels out of control, I hope you find some opportunities in this feed of what you can do to encourage others and yourself.

The 7 Best Online Help Resources for Depression in 2021

https://www.verywellmind.com/best-online-help-for-depression-4691259

If you find yourself experiencing a sense of prolonged “blah,” perhaps it is time for professional assistance. Keep in mind that depression doesn’t just mean feeling down all the time. In depression, all of your emotions are “depressed,” there is no high highs or low lows, just a constant feeling of “blah.” There are a number of online links in this article with explanations and ratings beside each one. Please pass this on if you know of someone needing help right now.

How kids can benefit from mindfulness training

https://theconversation.com/how-kids-can-benefit-from-mindfulness-training-151654

Mindfulness training for children is a great preventative strategy to feelings of being overcome. This should be standard curriculum any year, but ESPECIALLY this year (2021).

Winter Got You Down? Here's How to Combat Seasonal Blues, According to Experts

https://time.com/5922072/seasonal-depression-expert-advice/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=sfmc&utm_campaign=newsletter+brief+default+ac&utm_content=+++20210104+++body&et_rid=21600831

Here is a list of activities your family or you can do to combat the feelings that you are stuck indoors during a cold winter lock-down.

College student offers free tutoring service to kids of frontline workers

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/03/us/student-tutors-frontline-workers-trnd/

Speaking of taking a positive initiative, kudos to this young man who is offering to tutor children of frontline workers during the pandemic. This should be an activity that all our high schools encourage by creating time for students to engage in similar activities. Not just for front-line workers, but children of minorities (that’s who research is telling us are experiencing the biggest educational gap at this time).

People started breaking Covid rules when they saw those with privilege ignore them

As we watch accounts of some government leaders telling their people stay home while they slip off for vacations, we need to see the extent of possible damage from poor leadership modeling. This will come up repeatedly in upcoming links as governments look at the behavior of their own ranks.

Don't Let The Pandemic Winter Get You Down: 9 Creative Ways To Socialize Safely

We should not be in a closed room with people who are outside of our intimate bubble. But we still need to find ways to socialize AND to help our children socialize. Creativity is critical and just what this link offers.

Why This Tiktok Kindergarten Teacher May Be 2020’s Best Leadership Role Model

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tonyewing/2021/12/29/why-this-tiktok-kindergarten-teacher-may-be-2020s-best-leadership-role-model/

Great leadership is not limited to board rooms or (apparently) government offices. Look at the leadership modeled by this Kindergarten teacher. If we can’t make our message simple enough for a child to understand, then we may not really understand our own message.

It’s good to take some time off to refresh our funny bones. Not all of these TikTok links are humorous, but the creativity is a huge endorphin boost. Enjoy!!!
