How long does it take for the COVID-19 vaccines to become effective?

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/how-long-does-it-take-for-the-covid-19-vaccines-to-become-effective-1.5402892

We could all use definitive information about vaccines, the more accurate information we have, the better we are able to converse about why they are so important. This article looks at the effectiveness of different vaccines, how long they take to be effective and even the effectiveness of a single dose. The bottom line, if your vaccine requires it, get the second dose, with the same vaccine, in the suggested time.

This is the #1 Issue Remote Workers Face – and Here’s the Surprisingly Easy Fix

https://www.inc.com/robert-glazer/the-number-1-issue-remote-workers-face-and-surprisingly-easy-fix.html

The primary issue that people working from home are dealing with is setting boundaries. Those of us who do work from home, roll out of bed in the morning to e-mails and often check them last thing at night. There are good suggestions in this article about creating those needed boundaries for self-care if you are working from home and plan on continuing.

This Face Mask Mistake Is Worse Than No Mask at All

https://ca.style.yahoo.com/face-mask-mistake-worse-no-190151172.html

I admit I have a pet peeve about wearing masks and getting vaccinated, but this article hits the nail on the sensitive head for me. People who wear their masks around their chins. To me, wearing a mask properly is simply common courtesy. It’s not just about my own safety, it is the safety of others and it is thoughtless to put others needlessly at risk because it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. Courtesy and thoughtfulness, that’s the stuff of kindergarten in my mind.

Biden Administration Looks For Help With Next Phase Of Pitching COVID Vaccines

https://apple.news/AHvRhdLVSRnq0DDquduJVkg

I include this article not to be US-specific, but to highlight the emotional intelligence of admitting that appealing through science and the news has just about reached its zenith as far as promoting vaccines. The Biden Administration is generating innovative ideas for using social networks and community relationships to get the message out to those who are vaccine-hesitant or unable to keep their appointments for a myriad of reasons. We need this type of insightful thinking in more social situations (i.e. raising awareness and action for climate change).

The pandemic of despair: How COVID changed our mental health

https://www.cnet.com/features/the-pandemic-of-despair-how-covid-changed-our-mental-health/

There’s been an alarming decrease in mental health due to the pandemic. Psychologists say that people’s biggest fears are 1) getting the virus or giving it to someone, 2) the social isolation of those fears and 3) for some, the economic downturn attached to the pandemic. Together, these factors have caused an increase in suicide rates, stress in families, anxiety in teens and families.

There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/19/well/mind/covid-mental-health-languishing.html?fbclid=IwAR3rmGvTQFH7b4ZeH2nNKqC9W6G7HhKerKndh78eZyrUpjFqbGzDYqXS-g0

Adam Grant is an author and widely known social influencer. The term he uses here, languishing, seems to capture the feelings many have at this time. The lack of motivation, the sense of haziness, the lack of desire to pursue goals or relationships. For many, depression or despair doesn’t capture what they are experiencing. Perhaps languishing does.

Taking On Climate Change At Home: How You Can Cut Carbon Emissions

https://www.npr.org/2021/04/08/985307540/taking-on-climate-change-at-home-how-you-can-cut-your-homes-carbon-emissions

We passed another Earth Day this week and it is important to remember that our environment can’t take care of us if we don’t take care of it. There is no secret to the science that a lack of diversity in our biosphere is causing an increase in disease. We just need to make the case to our generation and the one to come. Similar to this pandemic, the dire problems we are facing seem ephemeral and, as a result, we might not feel the urgency. But urgent action is needed locally and globally. We need to learn what we can do within our own households, but also in our governments and with our corporate purchases.
